Job Search Tips: What’s in a Name?

I just read a post by Heather Huhman about some habits to break while job searching.  She lists five “don’ts” when job hunting:

  1. Don’t job search: company search
  2. Don’t neglect your online presence
  3. Don’t apply for jobs you’re not qualified for
  4. Don’t become depressed
  5. Don’t become desperate

The advice that caught my eye was the one about online presence. Whenever I Googled my own name, I found A LOT of others with the same name on various mediums. What can people with a very common name do about their online presence? For example, if five John Smiths have good online presence, are they hurt because their name is not the one to show up on the first page of the search?

What are your thoughts or suggestions for this dilemma? Do any of you have stories to share about this name conundrum?
